Ben Radley (Guest Constructions Pty Ltd)

Benj Radley

Name: Benjamin Radley

Subject: Bsc Geography, MA Environmental Management and Consultancy

Year Graduated: 2012, 2013

College: Cartmel

Where are you now and what are you doing?
Sydney (Australia). I am currently undertaking an apprenticeship in carpentry with Guest Constructions Pty Ltd and attending TAFE NSW.

What would you like to do next?
The aspiration now is to gain my Australian citizenship and complete my carpentry apprenticeship whilst also gaining my builders licence. Then after completion I would like to apply for the Australian Antarctic Expedition as a carpenter in order to fulfil a dream of visiting the continent and maybe further study afterwards in construction management.

Why did you choose to study at Lancaster?
I decided to study at Lancaster in Geography as it was recommended by my college Geography teacher. However, its proximity to the Lake District was a big draw with the opportunity to enjoy the fellow countryside.

What was your favourite part of your degree and why?
Field trips to Iceland for the glaciation module and Croatia for Water and Environmental Management in a Mediterranean Context. Also, my MA dissertation. The reason why would be that I feel that there is no better way to put the context you learn in lectures into practice in the field to understand the environment around us. Then for the dissertation in my masters it would be because it gives you the opportunity to have a project of your own and put your skills to the test.

How do you think your time at Lancaster prepared you for what you’re currently doing?
Despite currently doing a career not directly linked to my degrees the skills and everything I learned can be applied into relevant context.

What did you enjoy most about your time at Lancaster?
Iceland (find out more about the Glacier-Landscape Interaction Icelandic field trip here).
