Chelsea Mallinson (Nutrition Internship)

Lancaster Environment Centre Graduate Chelsea Mallinson

Name: Chelsea Mallinson

Subject: BSc Natural Sciences [Environmental Science/Geography]

Year Graduated: 2016

College: Pendle

Where are you now and what are you doing?
I am currently doing a Nutrition Internship in South Africa, Cape Town through the Projects Abroad Company. Throughout my time I will be preparing healthy recipes and meals for children and young adults attending surfing classes, preparing and playing educational activities and games with the children, planting and maintaining herb gardens, running a drop-in clinic for passers-by in Muizenberg and travel to care centres for young children to deliver food and give caregivers a workshop on cooking healthy meals.

What would you like to do next?
I am hoping to do some voluntary work at a local hospital working in the nutrition section. Over summer I have applied to work at a children’s fitness camp in Leeds for more knowledge and experience working in nutrition. I hope in September 2017 to start a Masters in nutrition in Leeds.

Why did you choose to study at Lancaster?
I loved the feel of the campus from the first open day and I felt Lancaster could be a new home. It was also far enough away from home to become fully independent but also close enough to be with family whenever I wanted. I also loved the college system and feeling a part of something! Pendle till I die!

What was your favourite part of your degree and why?
Being able to do so many different modules. In third year especially, I loved being able to change direction and take some Human Geography modules, which ultimately changed my career path to something I really enjoying learning about.

How do you think your time at Lancaster prepared you for what you’re currently doing?
I feel confident working abroad and meeting new people of all ages every day. Being at Lancaster taught me that even in your final term you can meet new people and make friends totally out of the blue.

What did you enjoy most about your time at Lancaster?
Becoming independent and enjoying activities on and off campus with friends; whether it was a night out or a 7am circuit training session with the Rowing Society on a Monday morning!
