Access & Participation

REAP has a long history in the area of widening access and participation, from our earlier projects working with families to more recent programmes looking at student transitions. We consider the cultural, social and economic barriers to learning and suggest how to enhance policy and practice to improve participation. We have researched and evaluated several national widening access and participation initiatives, from those which are:

  • broad in their reach and aims for example, raising awareness, aspiration, attainment and achievement amongst young people from disadvantaged backgrounds;
  • more specific in their focus for example, encouraging access to engineering and improving access to medical school;
  • targeted at particular groups for example the role of Families and Higher Education in Decision-making, or refugees, asylum seekers and Migrants
