Kay Gorzko (NV5)

Name: Kay Gorzko

Subject: BSc Earth Science and Geography

Year Graduated: 2015

College: County

Where are you now and what are you doing?

I am currently working as a geologist for an Engineering firm in San Diego, California, USA. I work both in the office and in the field. Office work is mostly report writing about field activities and findings, but fieldwork can vary greatly. Some examples of my duties are:

1) Testing soil that is being prepared to take the load of building structures, roads and any other construction.

2) Observing the above, and writing reports in daily construction activities.

3) Working with other companies to drill thin cores of subsurface material to get an indication of the geology surrounding where a company would like to begin construction.

What would you like to do next?

My plan is to stay with my current company for a few years to gain experience. The company has many opportunities to learn, so I would like to become certified to work with GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and AutoCAD software; an integral part of most engineering firms.

Why did you choose to study at Lancaster?

I chose to study at Lancaster because of the reputation the LEC had. It was a highly ranked university for Earth Sciences, so I felt I would be getting a high quality of tuition and support.

What was your favourite part of your degree and why?

My favourite part was field trips. I love being outside, and it is part of the reason I love my current job. I really enjoyed the hands on learning that field trips afforded me.

How do you think your time at Lancaster prepared you for what you’re currently doing?

My thesis definitely prepared me for report writing, and helped me to get my current job, as for most undergraduates in the USA, a thesis (dissertation) is not required as part of your degree. The strict deadlines prepared me for the reality of the working world, where clients usually want something within some ridiculous period, and it is up to you to get it done on time.

What did you enjoy most about your time at Lancaster? (Including extra-curricular activities and beyond?)

I enjoyed being close to the city, and having a variety of places to study and spend time socialising. I also volunteered for Nightline, which was very rewarding; I would highly recommend it to anyone currently at Lancaster!
