Andy Payne (Travis Perkins)

Lancaster University Graduate Andy Payne

Name: Andy Payne

Subject: MSci Environmental Science

Year Graduated: 2016

College: Bowland

Where are you now and what are you doing?
I am about to start a two year graduate scheme as an IT Business Analyst with Travis Perkins plc which owns some well-known names within construction and home improvement including Toolstation, Tile Giant, Wickes and Travis Perkins itself.

What would you like to do next?
I’m not entirely sure what I would like to do following the end of my graduate scheme at the moment, but it is likely that I will stay within business or maybe consider moving into the environment sector.

Why did you choose to study at Lancaster?
The first thing that drew me towards Lancaster was its reputation. But it was when I first visited the city and campus that I fell in love with Lancaster and led to me choosing it as my firm choice. Both the campus and the city centre have a very welcoming and homely feel which is an instant attraction. As well as this, campus is so well-contained and a very pleasant environment to study in.

What was your favourite part of your degree and why?
My favourite part of studying Environmental Science at Lancaster was the flexibility that I was given to study a variety of different modules that I had an interest in. Not only did this mean that I enjoyed my studies more it also meant that I gained a vast array of transferable skills that were paramount in me obtaining a place on a graduate scheme in the business sector.

How do you think your time at Lancaster prepared you for what you’re currently doing?
As mentioned, I have picked up numerous transferable skills that have enabled me to choose a career path that at first glance may not seem relevant to my degree. In addition to this, there is so much support from within the careers service, with things like the Lancaster Award, that has helped to build my confidence and skill set and I believe ultimately helped me to sell myself better in application forms and interviews.

What did you enjoy most about your time at Lancaster?
The main thing that I enjoyed about my time at Lancaster was the overall atmosphere on campus. There is always something social going on and so many societies to choose from which helps to provide the ideal balance between work and social life. Everyone at the university is driven to be the best that they can be whilst making sure that they have fun along the way! I also liked the fact I was able to work part-time at the university during my studies providing me with valuable employment experience.
