Sophie Millington (Marketing)

Sophie Millington

Name: Sophie Millington

Subject and Study level: BA (hons) Geography

Year graduated: 2014

College: Lonsdale

Where are you now and what are you doing?
Since leaving Lancaster, I decided to apply the transferable skills I learnt during my degree and take a slightly different direction into the world of  marketing. I am now an Account Executive at McCann Manchester, where I work on the Aldi account, specifically the UK Leaflets which you see in store each week.

Why did you choose to do this?
I have always had a creative side to me, and being immersed in this kind of environment is something i thoroughly enjoy.

What would you like to do next?
For the time being I want to continue to develop and learn more about marketing. After that, who knows what will happen!

What made you choose to study at Lancaster?
For me, a campus environment was as must. Lancaster has a great community vibe and is surrounded by such beautiful countryside too!

What was your favourite part of your degree and why?
The highlight of my degree had to be going to New York. That was amazing! This degree offered numerous and varied opportunities to get outdoors and apply what we had learnt in the lecture theater to real life situations. I think this is vital when studying Geography and something Lancaster does very well.

How do you think your time at Lancaster prepared you for what you’re currently doing?
Some people find it strange that I did a Geography degree and now work in Marketing. However, a lot of the transferable skills I learnt I now apply daily in my current role. Time management, communication, planning, problem solving, self motivation, working independently and working as a team, are all skills I developed throughout my degree and extra curricular activities at University, ,and continue to use and develop today.

What did you enjoy most about your time at Lancaster? (Including extra-curricular activities and beyond)
For me, I loved getting involved in all the extra curricular activities and I think the college system made that even more possible. I joined the University Rowing team and my college Netball team, of which I became captain for my final two years. Beating the unbeatable Fylde in my third year was definitely a highlight.
