Waitrose working to encourage sustainable food production
Bakkavor is the UK’s leading provider of freshly prepared foods and is unique in supplying the widest variety of freshly prepared foods on an international scale.
In 2000 we opened our Waitrose dedicated salads factory in Lincolnshire, Wingland Foods. We source salad crops year round from over 100 growers in the UK, Europe and USA and grow our beansprouts for stir-fries in our own dedicated facility.
Building on our fundamental commitment to procuring safe, high quality produce, the Waitrose Farm Assessment allows us to promote the principles of sustainable farming with our supply base. Using the Muddy Boots data analysis tools, we are able to identify and share good practice. We have been able to spot opportunities for improvement that are common across several suppliers and initiate projects to help our growers exploit them.
In this video, Niall Cameron, Group Technical Manager at Bakkavor introduces two growers who have used innovative techniques on their farms.
Jepco Marketing is one of Bakkavor’s key lettuce suppliers in the UK. Jepco’s Head of Production, Phillip Hubbert, explains a novel technique that has allowed them to improve yield and quality, while reducing the use of water and herbicides.
Casa Verde is a key grower of baby leaf crops in Italy. General Manager, Giampaolo Oliviero, explains how they used science to help keep frogs out of the crop while encouraging biodiversity.
