Envision DTP welcomed its fourth cohort of students at the end of October for a 3 day Welcome Event. This was held at Forrest Hills in Lancaster University.
All 15 students attended this event along with their supervisors and the Envision Management Team.
Throughout the three days students and supervisors participated in welcome sessions, training activities, guest speakers and team building outdoor pursuits.
Nick Ostle, the Envision DTP Director, introduced the Envision programme explaining what students and supervisors could expect over the next 4 years. The students then introduced themselves and discussed their project. The students were full of enthusiasm for their PhD project and all keen to get stuck in.
Other training sessions included a workship on how to ‘Fast Track Your Impact’ by Jennifer Chubb. Simon Vaukins, Lancaster University’s Faculty Graduate School Manager ran a session on ‘Managing Your PhD’. We also welcomed Mike Berners-Lee from Small World Consulting whi delivered a fascinating talk ‘Burning questions and the implications for scientists’. The workshop was received very well by the students “An excellent speaker and very fascinating. It helped get me even more excited about my research.”.
Day two was spent getting to know each other. Carnegie Great Outdoors joined us to run an outdoor team building activity day. This included raft building, archery and problem solving puzzles. The group had fun raft building on the lake.
Thank you to all of our speakers, students and supervisors who took time out of their busy schedules to attend!
