About GMN

The Global Mobilities Network champions the mobilities paradigm. This is a lens through which researchers and practitioners can examine the social, cultural, economic and political implications of a world that is increasingly characterised by relations of mobility and immobility.

The mobilities paradigm has multi-disciplinary scope, developed through research in sociology, geography, media and communications, history, transport, design, art and performance. At its core, the mobilities paradigm examines the power and politics that different forms of mobility give rise to; it charts inequalities that result; develops and evaluates the potentials for progressive forms of mobility justice and sustainable mobilities.

The mobilities paradigm is a powerful analytical and methodological tool for understanding some of the most pressing global challenges that involve different kinds of movement:

  • From the plight of displaced migrants and refugees, to the the provision of aid and assistance in disasters, the mobilities paradigm provides a lens to understand pressing humanitarian challenges.
  • From the inequalities created by long global supply chains, to the the problem of where to store and dispose of waste, the mobilities paradigm provides a lens to understand pressing consumption challenges.
  • From the intensified movements of data, to the dilemmas about how new digital technologies will change personal transportation, the mobilities paradigm provides a lens to understand pressing technological challenges.
  • From the headache of urban gridlock, to the task of providing infrastructures in rapidly growing cities, the mobilities paradigm provides a lens to understand pressing urban challenges.
  • From the livelihood challenges of climate change, to the biodiversity perils of soil erosion, the mobilities paradigm provides a lens to understand pressing environmental challenges.
  • From the threats of anti-microbial resistance and global pandemics, to the patterned dangers of air pollution, the mobilities paradigm provides a lens to understand pressing health challenges.
