CALL FOR PAPERS and DESIGN AWARDS COMPETITION Deadline October 15, 2018 56th International Making Cities Livable Conference on A Healthy City for ALL Portland, OR, June 17-21, 2019

We rejoice that many cities now are becoming more healthy, by making great improvements in sociable, walkable, and bike-friendly streets, public transit, fine-grained mixed use, high density, human scale housing, and access to community places, nature and healthy food. At this conference we are looking to present the best models around the world in presentations and in the design competition.

The BIG challenge is that these goals are not reaching the population groups most in need. The poorest neighborhoods suffer the greatest health problems. Moreover, many cities face an unprecedented housing affordability crisis, gentrification, and increasing homelessness. We especially want to hear from you – in presentations and in the design competition – if you are introducing innovative strategies to improve poor neighborhoods!

Call for Papers:
Those wishing to give a presentation should submit a 250-word abstract for consideration before October 15, 2018. Please submit online, following the Call for Papers Guidelines on the web at: http://www.livablecities.org/conferences/56th-conference-portland/call-papers
Please prepare proposals for blind peer review. Notification will be sent within 4 weeks of submission. Final accepted papers are due March 2019. Papers must be presented in person at the conference and will be published in the digital conference proceedings. Selected papers will also be published in eReports on focused topics.

The 2019 IMCL Design Competition jury will consider all submissions that speak to Designing a Healthy City for All. Projects that emphasize Health, Equity, Community, and Sustainability are actively sought, and will be given particular consideration. The review procedure will be conducted by blind peer review.
To qualify, projects may be already constructed, or in design, but must be real projects commissioned with the intention to build.  There are no restrictions as to where these projects may be located.

Topics:
Paper proposals and design projects are invited from practitioners and scholars in planning, transportation planning, urban design, architecture, landscape architecture, and urban affairs concerned with the following issues:
.       Urban pedestrian networks, bicycle planning, buffered bikeways
.       Complete streets, green streets, greening urban arterials
.       Hospitable streets
.       Public Places for Social Life
.       Multi-functional city and neighborhood squares
.       Promoting the urban forest: incidental nature: streets, walls, roofs
.       Restoring urban watercourses/streams/rivers
