Smart Surface Analysis with Dr Alex Robson

GISMO Event

Join Dr Alex Robson and members of the Materials Science Institute and GISMO teams on Friday 27th November to learn about surfaces & surface analysis.

The event will be the first in a series of breakfast seminars from researchers working in these fields about advances in materials science and how they can benefit you and your business.

Surface analysis techniques can provide a great deal of information about a sample or a product. As surfaces and interfaces are critically important in how a material interacts with its surroundings, information about a surface’s structure or chemistry can be key for quality control, problem solving, and product or process development.

Examples include verifying the structure of a semiconductor device, identifying contaminants or impurities on a sample, determining the composition of a thin film, characterising surface, material and device properties, and identifying differences between materials, products and processes.

Surfaces can generally be defined as the outermost layer of a material or object. It is often an interface between different states of matter, essentially the region where one material or object ends and interacts with its surroundings.

While the bulk properties of a material often define its application, the material’s surface affects how it interacts with its environment, surroundings or other materials, and can greatly affect the material’s behaviour.

Meet our materials science experts and find out about how to engage with Lancaster University’s Materials Science Institute and the GISMO programme to drive innovation and improve business prospects, improve the reliability and performance of your products and processes, and find out more about the specialist facilities at Lancaster University.
