Julien Doulcet: GISMO Innovation Fellow

We caught up with Julien Doulcet, post-doctoral fellow and GISMO Innovation Fellow in Chemicals and Hydrogen.

Describe yourself in three words.
Passionate, Persistent, Cartesian.

Who or what inspired you to a career in science?
Reading science books and magazines as a kid.

What qualifications do you hold?
PhD in Chemistry from the University of East Anglia.

How long have you worked at Lancaster University (and in what roles)?
I’ve worked as a post-doctoral fellow since September 2018, and started my role at GISMO this year.

What do you like most about working at Lancaster University?

It’s a young and motivated institution.

What are you most looking forward to doing on the GISMO project?
Conducting research projects that have direct industrial application.

What is your greatest/proudest achievement (in or outside work)?
Starting a family.

What are your hobbies and interests outside work?
Hiking, sports, listening to music.

What do you eat for breakfast most days?
Bread with various toppings.

What’s your favourite smart material – and why?
Semiconductors, as they hold the key to the future of green solar energy.

What sort of problems can you help small businesses to solve?
Organic chemistry /catalysis-related problems, as well as achieving/optimising the synthesis of desired targets using organic chemistry and catalysis.

What advice do you have for businesses that are not familiar with working with universities?
Development of new materials and/or chemicals does not happen in a black box. An academic approach will enable to understand how best to apprehend a problem in order to solve it.
