Armin Yousefi Kanani – GISMO Innovation Fellow

We caught up with Armin Yousefi Kanani, doctoral researcher and GISMO Innovation Fellow for Additive Manufacturing.

Describe yourself in three words.
Motivated, hardworking, organised.

Who or what inspired you to a career in science?
The first time when I saw the shuttle spacecraft on TV.

What qualifications do you hold?
MSc in Mechanical Engineering. Hopefully, after Christmas, I will get my PhD (need to do my viva 😊)

How long have you worked at Lancaster University (and in what roles)?
I have been working at Lancaster University since January 2017 as a doctoral researcher.

What do you like most about working at Lancaster University?
I like campus a lot.

What are you most looking forward to doing on the GISMO project?
Working with SMEs to design, develop and use new or alternative materials.

What is your greatest/proudest achievement (in or outside work)?
Hopefully getting my PhD finished!

What are your hobbies and interests outside work?
Hiking, gaming, dancing (salsa) and sports.

What do you eat for breakfast most days?
Banana, muffin, bread and Nutella.

What’s your favourite smart material – and why?
Self-healing materials, as they can repair damage due to normal usage which helps to reduce wastage of material.

What sort of problems can you help small businesses to solve?
Prove a new concept, design, product or process and to overcome problematic design or materials issues.

What advice do you have for businesses that are not familiar with working with universities?
Validating a design could be extremely costly if you take the conventional route. At Lancaster University we have a range of resources (academic staff, students, state of the art equipment and software) to help you to reduce manufacturing costs.
