Theme 4 – Resistance

Welcome to our Fourth and final theme!

In this theme, we will explore resistance through two lenses. In the first part, we’ll go back to the concept of the panopticon and unpack how workplace control and surveillance is enacted, and various ways of framing workers’ resistance to it (part 1). Then, we’ll explore digital organising as a form of collective action and explore how it differs from more ‘traditional”’ movements (part 2).

For our final theme you have a number of tasks to do:

Part 1 (Week 8)

• • Watch a couple of narrated powerpoints and do a quiz (2 hours)
  • Read an annotated paper (2 hours)
  • Go to Mural to work on examples of workplace surveillance through the lens of Foucault’s panopticon (2 hours max) and prepare “talking points” with your group (1 hour) for the Week 9 seminar

Part 2 (Week 9)

• • Watch a narrated powerpoint (1 hour)
  • Read an annotated paper (2 hours)
  • Identify the differences between digital and non-digital organising and discuss these with your group on Mural (2 hours)

Don’t forget to assess/give feedback to the 2 short essays that were assigned to you over on Moodle! (1h)
