Theme 4 – Resistance

PART 2 (Week 9)

Watch this narrated powerpoint

In this video, I discuss two things in relation to digital organising. First, the possibility of breaking from the digital panopticon, through both physical and digital means, with a case study of the gig economy. Then, discussions of the specificities of organising digitally, and how this might differ from more traditional forms of collective action.

Then, read this annotated paper by Massa (2017) (optional) :

Building and Sustaining the Anonymous Online Community

As you read the article, try to identify the characteristics of ‘online organising’ given in the paper

Identify some of the differences between digital organising and more traditional forms

From the powerpoint and the article, identify some of the differences that characterise ‘digital organising’ compared to more traditional forms.

You can think about:

      • What are some elements characterising digital organising?
      • How do these elements/characteristics shape organising?
      • How do these work in relation to other non-technological elements (culture, etc)

For each of these, try to reflect back on the questions asked in Theme 1 – are technological artefacts acting with agency in shaping the organisation/collective action? Are they merely vehicles for people to enact change? How do these constitute examples of theories presented at the beginning of the module (SCOT, ANT, Technological Determinism)?

Place these examples in the dedicated group Mural (“Theme 4 activity 2 (week 9)”) for discussion with your group. If you’d rather have a more ‘unstructured’ discussion (less ‘analysis’, more ‘summary’) with your group, you can instead write down some talking points. You can then share these in Teams, in the “class discussion” channel!

Psst… have you completed your feedback for the second peer assessment? If not, it’s this way!
