Introduction (Week 1)

First, watch a 30 min ‘how to’ video about the way the module is structured.

In this video I cover 4 things:

    • the core content hosted on this website
    • the way work group meetings are organised and how to make the best of Mural and Teams
    • Some info about your seminars
    • The peer-assessed short essays.

viewing the video in Panopto, you can navigate between these topics by selecting the ‘content’ tab on the left (on laptop only):

Go to Mural to do a short group ice-breaker and introduce yourself on Teams

Find the Mural titled ‘Week 1 – Ice breaker’ and follow the instructions on the worksheet to get to know your group mates a bit better!

Find your Teams private group and introduce yourself on the chat.

This is an asynchronous activity : you can accomplish it on your own and visit it again later to see other group members’ contribution!

If you cannot see your Mural room or Team group, you might need to register to a group first on Moodle. Contact me if you run into any issue at this stage!

Now watch this video about the history of philosophy of technology

A (very brief) history of philosophy of technology

(low bandwidth alternative)

The video goes from Aristotle and Plato’s attempts to identify the differences between ‘natural’ and ‘man-made’ objects, to the concept of the hyperreal defined by Baudrillard.

Head back to Mural for your first timetabled group meeting to do a quiz!

Find the worksheet labelled ‘Week 1 activity’ and read the instructions to prepare for your first group meeting – you can get on Teams to your private channel to launch a meeting at the timetabled day and time of your meeting.

This is a synchronous activity: you and your group mates should be all connected to Mural/Teams at the same time (during your timetabled meeting).

Finally, watch this video on ways to define technology

Defining Technology

(low bandwidth alternative)

In it, I discuss how we can think about technology not just as artefacts (objects), but also processes and knowledge.

… and that’s it for Week 1!

At this stage, if you have trouble navigating the website, or using Mural, or any accessibility issue, please get in touch with me ASAP. You can also notify me of any issue during our Week 2 scheduled Q&A.
