πŸ‘‹ A warm welcome back to Sofia Antoniazzi, who returns to the NEON Lab today as an MRes student after previously completing her third-year BSc dissertation with us! Sofia’s project will focus on investigating the complex links between late-onset epilepsy and dementia in older adults.

πŸ“ Our latest review on the role of slow-wave sleep in offline memory processing has been published in Frontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience! We draw on evidence from human EEG studies and discuss how slow-wave sleep supports the consolidation of both declarative and procedural memories and contributes to higher cognitive functions. Read the article here.

πŸ‘‹ A huge welcome to Samantha-Jo Hollings, who joins the NEON Lab today as our new Research Technician! Sammy will be supporting our experimental studies on the role of sleep in memory processing.

πŸŽ“ Congratulations to our 2024-25 BSc cohort on graduating this week! Yuan Sagala, Sofia Antoniazzi, Ella Spencer and Umar Suleman completed their final-year research projects in the NEON Lab. We wish them all the best in their next steps!

🎀 Dr Sana Hannan performed stand-up comedy at the Royal Society this evening! This event was part of the Royal Society’s Summer Science Exhibition 2025 – a public engagement initiative aimed at making science accessible to a broad audience. Huge thanks to Steve Cross and the Royal Society for the kind invitation! Click here to view the LinkedIn post and photos from the event.

πŸ‘‹ A warm welcome to Andrea Mosqueda-Jolly and Summer Rickard, who are joining the NEON Lab this week as casual Research Assistants, as part of the Psychology Employability Programme. We’re excited to have them on board!

πŸ’¬ Dr Sana Hannan, along with Professor Hedley Emsley (Lancaster Medical School) and Dr Clare Gordon (University of Central Lancashire), formally launch the Collaboration for Late-Onset and Vascular Epilepsy Research (CLOVER) – a new network focused on epilepsy that begins later in life. The event was marked by holding a Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) workshop to bring together individuals with lived experience of late-onset, post-stroke, and vascular epilepsies to help shape the top research priorities. Click here to find out more about CLOVER.

⭐ Dr Sana Hannan has been awarded funding from the Academy of Medical Sciences! This award will support a new project investigating how the sleeping brain supports offline processing of memories. Click here to see the press release.

⭐ Leanna Keeble presents her poster at the Faculty of Health and Medicine Postgraduate Research Symposium.

πŸ‘‹ A warm welcome to Umesh Mudavath, who joins the NEON Lab as a Visiting PhD student!

🎀 Dr Sana Hannan delivers an invited public lecture to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of EEG at the β€˜I Love EEG’ event in Vilnius, Lithuania. In her talk, she discussed the importance of EEG as a tool for helping us understand the complex links between epilepsy and sleep.

πŸ’¬ Dr Sana Hannan organised and chaired a Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) workshop on epilepsy and Alzheimer’s Disease, bringing together volunteers from the Epilepsy Research Institute and Alzheimer’s Society patient networks. The workshop provided a platform for individuals with lived experience to offer valuable feedback on planned research in the NEON Lab, to help ensure our work is aligned with the needs and perspectives of those affected by these conditions.

🎀 Dr Sana Hannan performs a science-themed stand-up comedy set at a sold-out Bright Club! She talked about research in the NEON Lab and used humour to engage a diverse audience and promote public understanding of science. Click here to view the LinkedIn post and photos from the event.

πŸ‘‹ A huge welcome to Leanna Keeble, who joins the NEON Lab today as a PhD student funded by the BBSRC NorthWestBio Doctoral Training Partnership.

πŸŽ“ Congratulations to our MSci students, Tamzin Holden and Laura Yianni, who graduated this week! Both completed their final-year research projects in the NEON Lab. We wish them every success in their next chapters.

⭐ Congratulations to Joan Kolo who has been awarded a competitive BLS scholarship to undertake a Summer Research Internship in the NEON Lab!

πŸ“ Our new paper on the clinical utility of sleep recordings during pre-surgical evaluation with stereo-EEG has been published in the Journal of Clinical Neurophysiology! This systematic review compiles evidence on the important bidirectional links between sleep and various types of epileptic activity. Read the article here.

⭐ Dr Sana Hannan has been awarded the Professional Development Fund from the Faculty of Health and Medicine, Lancaster University to present her study on the link between sleep fragmentation and epileptic activity at the 15th European Epilepsy Congress in Rome.

πŸ‘‹ A warm welcome to MSci students Tamzin Holden and Laura Yianni, who join the NEON Lab this week to begin their final-year research projects!

⭐ Dr Sana Hannan joins Lancaster University as a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Neuroscience and receives start-up funding from the Division of Biomedical and Life Sciences to build her research programme and set up the NEON Lab.
