15:00 – 16:30 The Value of Storytelling within Business

n this unique workshop, English & Creative Writing graduate Samia Durani BA Hons English Literature (2018) will tell you all about her step career journey as a storyteller – from starting out as an intern at BBC Sport to stepping into the world of tech with IBM…

I studied a diverse range of literature from Middle East, Contemporary, Renaissance to Science Fiction and I even did a stint teaching English at a secondary school. After completing my bachelors, I decided to do a MSc in Information Technology, Management and Organisational Change at Lancaster University Management School. The skills that I learnt from my English literature degree, for example how to comprehend diverse texts, write and communicate effectively, have all proved to be valuable throughout my academic and work life.

I now work for IBM as a Cyber Security Technical Specialist. Although the world of technology and cyber security may seem to be far removed from the world of literature, it has proven to me time and time again to be not so far apart. As part of my training at IBM I was invited to a workshop around ‘the art of story telling’. Without stories we lack the ability to communicate effectively, to empathise with others and to view the world from different lenses whether that be philosophical, psychological, political or historical. English Literature has provided me with a solid set of skills that will continued to be utilised on a daily basis throughout my working career.

14:00 – 15:00 Public Art in Community Spaces

The workshop will feature two outstanding local arts organisations so tune in to get behind the scenes insights into their community outreach activities. We will be welcoming Lauren Zawadzki, Director of Deco Publique, and Paul Kondras and Neil Wilson from the White Elephant Gallery.

Deco Publique is an art and culture company making original new work, based by the sea in Morecambe and working around the North. It curates and produces ambitious cultural festivals, original commissions and artistic projects, creating exceptional experiences with artists and communities. It makes public art that animates coastal spaces, rural landscapes and urban centres.

Deco Publique’s portfolio includes the National Festival of Making and Vintage by the Sea; the commissioning programme – Art in Manufacturing; co-design programme – The FOLD; the World Record Breaking Very Big Catwalk and the co-production of landscape artworks, Headlands to Headspace.

The White Elephant Contemporary Gallery, also in Morecambe, sprang into life in April 2018. Since then it has staged seven different exhibitions, each radical and exciting in their own way. The creative team behind this new gallery goes by the name of The Karabekian/Nagardo Foundation. At the centre of this outfit is Paul Kondras and Neil Wilson, two renegades from the corporate world and state sector, respectively.

They call The White Elephant ‘a centre for creative consumerism’. It is already having a catalytic effect on the retail outlets in the street. Paul and Neil say they are reinventing the gallery form. Unlike so many contemporary galleries that are so often cold and forbidding, they have created a warm, hospitable and conversational space for ‘gallery virgins’ and the initiated, resulting in a footfall that would be the envy of any commercial or municipal gallery in the region.
