FASS Internship Scheme: Book Production and Publishing Assistant

 

Carnegie Publishing Ltd is a publishing company based in Lancaster, established 35 years ago. They publish a range of books for their own lists but the main part of the business is their complete book production service for external clients, including university presses, societies and individuals. They have expertise in all aspects of the publishing industry, from commissioning, editing and book design, to print buying and sales and marketing.   http://carnegiepublishing.co.uk/

 

Main Duties

  • To undertake tasks in support of text correcting, page design and page layout.
  • To participate in general book production work, alongside the rest of the staff group
  • To observe the working of the office and make constructive observations or suggestions.
  • To maintain a professional and mature attitude to working with Carnegie, for example in relation to contact with clients/staff, timekeeping, and adherence to Carnegie’s office practices (both formal and informal).

Skills Required

  • An aptitude for page layout an advantage
  • Excellent standard of spoken and written English
  • Preferably studying for an arts or graphic design, media or English degree
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Attention to detail, strong sense of pride in their work
  • An excellent working knowledge of IT
  • Some knowledge of InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Word, Excel
  • An ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to work as quickly as possible to deadlines while maintaining quality
