Essay marking workshop
This workshop takes place during your first tutor-led seminar. Its purpose is twofold. First, it’ll help you get familiar with assessing others’ writing and providing feedback: something you’ll have to do on your peers’ short essays during Weeks 4 and 5 (you’ll get a simplified feedback grid for this). Evaluating others’ writing is a great way to improve your own writing. Second, it’ll help you understand the criteria against which you’re evaluated on this module (through the final 2,500 words essay due in January).
Here’s what you need to prepare before the seminar (1h prep):
-
- Familiarise yourself with the OWT.326 feedback grid. This is the grid that I will be using to provide feedback on your final assessment. Highlight any area you’re uncertain of.
- Make sure you’re also familiar with the OWT grade descriptors.
- Read this student essay from last year and assess it against the criteria used above. What feedback would you give it? what did you think went well in the essay? What was an issue?
- Identify three key points that could improve the essay in relation to the marking criteria.
