Workshop Activities

The morning will focus on identifying new directions for HCI and Aging research; the afternoon will focus on articulating new principles for the field. The structure is as follows:

9:00–9:15 Organizers’ introduction. Bran Knowles and Aneesha Singh will introduce the structure and the aim of the day.
9:15–9:30 Keynote 1. Robin N. Brewer and Amanda Lazar will deliver a short talk to orient participants to the workshop themes.
9:30–11:00 Participant panels (x3). Participants will be grouped into panels of 3-4 authors based on emerging themes among the submissions. Speakers will be given the opportunity to present their proposed new direction, answer specific questions, and discuss with fellow panelists.
11:00–11:15 Coffee break.
11:15–12:00 New Directions (small group discussions). Reflecting on the morning’s panels and introductory responses already gathered through Discord, participants will work in small groups to identify new directions. Groups will be formed of all in-person or all remote attendees. Padlet will be used to create a structure for capturing ideas from each group.
12:00–12:30 Feedback and consolidation (whole group). Groups will then summarize their conversations for the whole group, and organizers will capture the new directions, forming the outline for outputs to follow the workshop.
12:30–13:30 Lunch break.
13:30–13:45 Keynote 2. John Vines will deliver a short talk to orient participants to the task of developing new principles.
13:45–15:15 Participant panels (x3). Following the format of the morning panels, speakers will present and discuss their proposed principles.
15:15-15:30 Coffee break.
15:30-16:15 New Principles (small group discussions). Participants will again work in small groups, this time to identify new principles.
16:15-16:45 Feedback and consolidation (whole group). Groups will present the conclusions from their group discussions, and organizers will capture the new principles and develop the outline for workshop outputs.
16:45-17:00 Conclusions and next steps. The organizers will wrap up proceedings by discussing key takeaways from the day and detailing the next steps for the group, including any plans for sustaining and growing the community.
