Thoughts & Speculations

Recursive estimation and the Brain

These thoughts were prompted by a series of programmes on  BBC TV presented by Professor Susan Greenfield and entitled ‘Brain Story: Why Do We Think and Feel as We Do?’. In one episode she referred to the relationship between the rather crude image projected on to our retina by the eye lens, and the much clearer picture that we actually ‘see’. And, as she proceeded to discuss this, it was as though she was describing the brain as acting like a Kalman Filter!

Recursive aspects of Quantum Mechanics

These thoughts relate to one of the basic equations of quantum mechanics, the Schrödinger equation. In particular, they concern how the solution of this equation, which describes the time evolution of the wave function state, can be compared with the solution of the Kalman Filter applied to a simple moving body example.
