The Centre for Gender Studies is particularly known for its work in feminist media studies. We run a Feminist Media & Cultural Studies Summer School for our MA students, and the undergraduate module Media & Gender is popular.
Feminist Media Studies @ Lancaster brings together those working in a wide range of fields at Lancaster and beyond. We include not only those who research gender-related topics, but broadly include those that employ critical theoretical, methodological, intersectional and inclusive feminist approaches to media and culture across disciplines.
Working within the Centre for Gender Studies, we aim to develop a collaborative and supportive space to discuss feminist and media topics, theory, methodologies, and pedagogies. This includes arranging seminars and publishing on feminist media studies-related topics, organising social events, and collaborating on research projects.
Our researchers have a range of expertise, including feminist, queer, trans, critical race and decolonial theories; digital media and culture; AI; affect and embodiment theory; celebrity theory; the cultural and creative industries; promotional cultures; fandom and participatory cultures; East and Southeast Asian popular culture; reality television; film theory and practice; photography; fashion and costume; literature; animals and the environment; youth justice; migration.
Aims
- To support and promote interdisciplinary research, scholarship, teaching and learning in the field of intersectional feminist media studies;
- To provide a peer support community for those interested in feminist media studies, including exchanging ideas and promoting collaboration;
- To organise seminars and other events related to the topic, to foster scholarly debate within Lancaster and beyond.
