At the Centre for Gender Studies you will not only find an intellectually stimulating and challenging environment, but you will also find a welcoming, supportive and inclusive community. This website acts as a hub for our various academic and social activities, and we’d like to extend a convivial invitation for you to join us. Feel free to say hello and get involved.

Based at Lancaster University, we are one of the largest centres in the UK for feminist research, gender studies and women’s studies (and the only centre of its kind in the North West of England). Formerly known as the Centre for Gender and Women’s Studies, the Centre for Gender Studies is now over 30 years old with a long and proud history, counting many world-leading leading feminist academics amongst its community.

The Centre fosters a particularly strong research culture and offers an exceptional environment for interdisciplinary research. We believe that feminist research is strengthened by its interdisciplinary approach, which is reflected in our connections with different subject areas and departments in the university Research interests represented within the Centre’s community include feminist technoscience, cultural studies, religious studies, visual culture, film and television studies, queer and sexuality studies, media studies, migration studies, multicultural studies, critical race studies, urban studies, migration, postcolonial studies, studies in literature and creative writing, management studies, theatre studies, disability studies and health studies. We also have links with other research centres and departments across and beyond Lancaster University.

See our people page for more information about the Centre for Gender Studies’ extended family and the research being conducted. We run a programme of events and seminars throughout the year, and you can either sign up to our newsletter or follow us on Twitter or FaceBook to be kept informed with what’s going on. Our core social gathering is Feminist Movie Monday, a monthly film screening and opportunity to chat with others.
