Attitudes to Data Investigated using Lego Serious Play

The Defence Data Research Centre (DDRC) conducted 33 workshops for six UK sectors in England, Scotland, and Wales between June and November 2023.  The facilitation methodology employed was LEGO © Serious Play ©, offering participants a chance to build models that represented their attitudes towards data in the workplace.  The sharing of their stories was recorded, transcribed, and edited, and provided the research dataset. Quantitative analyses provided insights into the prominent workshop themes and the overarching emotions expressed by participants when discussing data.  Qualitative analysis was utilised to report on the main concerns surrounding data by sector.  A triangulated data analysis approach for enhanced insights and improved validity and reliability offered a means of interpreting the discussions facilitated in the DDRC workshops.   These key research findings provide guidance to assist organisations in refining and strengthening their data environment through various means such as a thorough review of data management practices; organisational policies and procedures; and risks associated with human error, external threats, and IT infrastructure.
