CAISS talks series: Dr Sharon Glaas

Dr Sharon Glaas is a Senior Applied Linguist at DSTL whose research interests lie in how we use language to get things done; for example, how do we evaluate or persuade others? Her doctoral thesis was a corpus-assisted discourse study on the representation of the EU by political elites and the media in the lead up to Brexit. Her approach combines quantitative and qualitative methods and she will talk about how this can mitigate researcher bias in linguistics studies. She will also argue that her results demonstrate a kind of linguistics bias grounded in cultural norms, a kind of bias which is much harder to recognise but important to consider, especially as use of LLMs and AI increases.
