Understanding socio-economic integration through savings and investments – Information on face-to-face or Skype interviews

I am a Turkish immigrant who have been in the UK for 10 years now. I am based in Lancaster University Management School. I am the principal investigator in this research study.

As an immigrant who earns his living from research on human behaviour and institutions, my motivation for this project comes from the fact that in scholarly and popular debates, immigration and integration issues are discussed mainly from cultural perspectives (e.g., language, ethnic identity, religion, and attitudes).

However, these aspects do not tell the whole story of our experiences of immigration and integration in the UK. To better understand immigration and integration dynamics in these uncertain and challenging times, we need to better understand what we as immigrants do with the revenues we earn in our businesses and incomes we generate in the UK labour market, and how we contribute to the UK economy and society by investing our savings.

My project therefore aims to understand some of the economic, social, cultural, and individual drivers of our savings and investment decisions in the UK and our countries of origin. It is based on face to face interviews with and an online survey of members of  five different immigrant groups in the UK. These are Indian, Irish, Pakistani, Polish and Turkish people. Face to face or Skype based interviews aim to explore with open ended questions your perceptions and experiences  about savings and investment in the UK and your country of origins, and your future investment plans.

The project  (no FL16229) has been approved by the Ethics Committee of FASS and Lancaster University Management School. This means that we do not expect any type of risk (e.g., psychological, physical, professional, legal) to you because of your participation in this project. Your identity will be  anonymised and the data generated from your interview  will be stored and analysed in secure computers provided and maintained by Lancaster University. Anonymised excepts from the interviews may be used in research reports.

If you would like to take part in interviews, please  contact me directly at e.tarim@lancaster.ac.uk

Many thanks
