PART 1 (Week 4)
First, watch these two narrated powerpoints
This first video walks you through issues of racial bias in technology, and specifically in algorithms. We’ll discuss how these are encountered, where they come from and what they produce:
The second video will discuss definitions of disability and the relationship between disability, inclusivity and technological changes in the workplace:
Once you’re done, take this quick quiz to test your knowledge.
Then, read this annotated paper by Faulkner (2001)
Article on gender and technology
NB: if you need to reduce your time spent on this module you can skip pages numbered 85 through 89 (stop reading from the “Masculine Images of Technology” section and skip to conclusion).
pay particular attention to the examples used and the connections made to theories explored in Theme 1.
Go to Mural and open the “Theme 2 activity 1 (Week 4)” worksheet.
In this activity you’re asked to identify examples that illustrate the relationship between technology and race, gender and/or disability.
Summarise the examples that have been discussed in the lesson so far (as well as those in Theme 1). Identify on your own at least 2 new examples.
Place all these on your group’s Mural map (“Theme 2 activity 1 (week 4)”). For each, add a comment explaining which issue this falls under (gender, race, disability or an intersection) and whether the example was shaped by societal understanding of these, or shaped them instead (or both).
As usual if a group member has already placed an example you had in mind, you can instead comment on their choice, further develop their arguments, etc.
Prepare for the discussion of the Week 5 seminar
Asynchronously (outside of meeting), prepare with your group some “talking point” or a presentation, based on the work collectively done on Mural or other platforms (Teams, shared Google Doc) throughout the week, to explain how
-
-
-
- technology is shaped by society’s understanding of gender, race, disability
- in return, technology shapes or constrains understandings of gender, race, disability.
