Architecture between the Tides

The first pilot workshop of Coastal Nature Lab was organised in collaboration with Lancaster School of Architecture, as part of the 2023 Summer School.

The workshop introduced architecture students to the context of intertidal areas, as shifting landscapes and sites of complex multispecies interactions. In this workshop, we discussed and experimented with ways in which architecture can engage with such dynamics and interactions to promote coastal adaptation and healthy habitats for humans and non-humans. We did so through experimental, hands-on activities which involved working with natural materials to prototype structures that were then left on the beach and revisited after a full tidal cycle to observe the results of their interaction with the environment.

The workshop was coordinated by Serena Pollastri, Richard Brook, Adam Blaney.

Gloria Castro Quintero (part of Coastal Nature Lab) coordinated the testing of MiCP to turn wool into biocement, and Amy Gunawan delivered a willow weaving workshop that informed the design and making of the structures.
