A coming-of-age short surrealist drama about a girl stuck between order and passion. In a pure, ideal world full of rules, one schoolgirl is tempted to get a forbidden kiss and then faces the consequences of her behaviour.
My film, “Forbidden,” is a coming-of-age surrealist drama that aligns deeply with the theme of “Untold Stories.” This theme challenges artists to explore and illuminate hidden narratives and overlooked experiences, which is precisely what “Forbidden” aims to do. The film portrays the internal conflict of a young girl living in a world governed by stringent rules, depicting her struggle between conforming to societal expectations and pursuing her desires—symbolized by a forbidden kiss.
In this pure, yet restrictive setting, the girl’s journey represents a narrative often silenced in our society—the untold story of youth grappling with the clash between order and passion. Her decision to pursue a forbidden act, and the subsequent repercussions, bring to light the often unseen turmoil of coming of age under oppressive conditions. This story challenges conventional narratives about youth, proposing that beneath the surface of obedience lies a complex, untapped world of rebellion and self-discovery.
The project was inspired by a script from Enni Red, who crafted the story specifically with my aesthetic in mind. Our collaboration, rooted in a shared vision during our time at the Screen Academy in Edinburgh, has been a long-term endeavor, culminating in a film that combines a strong visual style with a compelling narrative. The use of central compositions and minimalistic set designs in pastel colors not only enhances the surreal quality of the film but also visually emphasizes the thematic contrast between the idealized world and the protagonist’s inner chaos. This film, “Forbidden,” seeks to contribute a unique voice to the discussion of untold stories by focusing on the pivotal, often hidden moments of transition that define the human experience.
