Together Apart (Matthew Kowalski)

17min 25s – 16:9

Synopsis

They’re together but they’re out of sync.

“Together Apart” depicts a couple’s relationship as it gradually dissolves, using a unique narrative where visuals follow a chronological order, and audio plays in reverse. This structure accentuates the emotional disconnect between the partners and highlighting the film’s pivotal moments.

As the couple drift apart, the backward audio evokes a haunting sense of nostalgia for their relationship through the echoes of their past and poignantly reflects how relationships dissolve.

Artist Statement

“Together Apart” delves into the theme of “Flight” through the evolving dynamic of a couple’s relationship. As the partners emotionally distance themselves from each other, their actions symbolize a retreat from their intimacy and connection as they look for what they really need. The film’s structure, with visuals advancing chronologically while the audio reverses, underscores this duality of a progression in time countered by a regression into memories.

The backward audio evokes a sense of longing and escape, illustrating how the characters flee from their present to avoid the pain of their unfulfilling relationship but as a result find more reasons to part ways. The couple’s gradual separation embodies the theme of “Flight” as both a physical and emotional departure. This dual movement reflects the theme of “Flight” as both a literal and metaphorical departure: the emotional flight from a once-close bond leading to the eventual physical separation of the couple.

By navigating the temporal juxtaposition between the image and audio, “Together Apart” offers a deep reflection on the nature of human relationships and the instinct to flee from emotional pain and the reluctant journey from a once shared path capturing the inevitability of change. This portrayal of flight, as both an escape and an integral part of the human condition, resonates with the complexities of love and loss, providing a rich and thoughtful exploration of the theme.
