How can we tell if we are colluding in our attempts to foster change?

People have long explored what institutional positioning might help them contribute to social change in relation to issues which challenge ‘mainstream’ thinking. Should aspiring change agents place themselves outside or inside established power systems? What are the advantages and disadvantages of the now popular inside-outsider approach?

As people increasingly work in cross-sector networks, these issues become more complex.

How can we tell in this work if we may be colluding? Might the ‘small wins’ we are valiantly trying to encourage in the service of systemic change become the dynamics of ‘more of the same’?

This seminar will include short presentations, Q&A and plenty of opportunity for participants to discuss how these issues apply to them. The event will include wine and cheese.

• Rebecca Willis, former vice chair of the Sustainable Development Commission and former director of Green Alliance. Becky has helped to train over 70 MPs from all major parties on climate change.

• Mike Berners-Lee, co-author of The Burning Question and director of Small World Consulting.
• Gail Whiteman, Rubin Chair in Sustainability, Director of the Pentland Centre for Sustainability in Business, Lancaster University

The event will bring together people from across the university, Lancaster city and the local area, so that the question can be explored from fresh angles in a lively but relaxed setting.
