Welcome

We are a diverse team of researchers, non-academic staff and students who are working together to enhance the environmental sustainability of Lancaster Environment Centre and its community of staff, students and partners.

As an environmental department, Lancaster Environment Centre (LEC) recognises that sustainability needs to be embedded in everything it does. We also recognise that many of our current practices are not in line with addressing the climate and ecological emergency. This Sustainability Group was established to:

    • Help enable Lancaster Environment Centre as an institution and community to put sustainability into action.
    • Engage with the wider Lancaster University on sustainability.
    • Act as a forum and platform for debate on sustainability issues.

To date we have made specific sustainability commitments in five areas: community; food and catering; teaching, learning and engaging; travel and waste. Particularly important is the Travel Decision Tree that we have developed to help everyone to make more sustainable travel choices.

Previous initiatives and events

    • Eat the talk – LEC’s sustainability commitments were launched at the 2020 departmental Winter Conference and the occasion was celebrated by the sharing of a delicious low-carbon, low-waste lunch.
    • LEC 2050 Food Week – a week of lunchtime activities organised aimed at sparking debate and generating action on issues relating to food sustainability and our campus. These activities were open to all during the week beginning Mon 29th Oct 2018. Get details of the Food Week event and you can download copies of our meat, vegetarian vegan lasagne and quiche recipe cards. Try the recipes and compare their sustainability scores, and send us pictures of your creations to #LEC2050week.
    • LEC 2050 Travel Week – How big is the sustainability challenge that lies ahead for travel, and what does this mean for the way we live and work? In spring 2018 the team conducted an interactive experiment to try to find out using a our 2050 travel calculator.
    • No Impact Week environmental detox – group members took on the challenge of living a low impact lifestyle during autumn 2017.
    • How to be sustainable – launch event held on 22nd November 2017.

Spring 2021 – This new website is in development. Thanks for your patience while we get things in place.
