Lancaster & surroundings

Lake District

Lancaster is a historic city located in a beautiful part of the country and is famous for its history, thriving arts scene and excellent pubs. The 12th century Lancaster Castle, for example, showcases 1,000 years of heritage and justice in the city and was the venue for the famous Pendle Witch trials in the 1600s. For those more interested in outdoor pursuits the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District National Parks are right on our doorstep and are well served by both road and rail links from the city.

The Arnside & Silverdale Area of Outstanding National Beauty is located just north of Lancaster and easily accessible by train with the area offering a plethora of easy coastal and woodland walking/running trails. Trowbarrow Quarry, near Silverdale, offers a range of bouldering and climbing  opportunities.

Dedicated mountain bike trails to the east of Lancaster can be found in the Forest of Bowland, notably Gisburn Forest located beyond the Trough of Bowland (~30 mins by car from Lancaster).

Information on train and bus routes can be found on the Traveline website.
