Long range scanning based detection of alpha–induced air fluorescence even under daylight conditions

Funding: NNL-NDA, £86k, 2015–2019

Investigators: Professor C J Taylor, Dr K Gamage (Glasgow University)

Alpha radiation detection is time consuming and hazardous to carry out due to the short range of alpha particles in air. This project will investigate novel detection methods based on alpha-induced air fluorescence. These methods will be used in a nuclear decommissioning context to detect plutonium contaminated materials.
