He completed a PhD in Painting at The Royal College of Art in 2018. His doctoral thesis was titled \u201cThe Condition of Painting: Reconsidering Medium Specificity\u201d. He has exhibited widely and undertaken professional residencies in Munich, Dublin and Prague. Solo exhibitions include: <em>Pride of Place: A Painter\u2019s Perspective<\/em> (Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Wakefield, 2002), <em>A Room with a View<\/em> (The Atkinson Gallery, Southport, 2004), <em>Between Then and Now<\/em> (Dean Clough, Halifax, 2005), <em>A Room with a View 2<\/em> (View Two Gallery, Liverpool, 2008), In Two Minds (Ashton Art Gallery, Ashton Under-Lyne, 2010), Small Works (Gallery on the Green, Settle, 2017) and Elegies in Grey, (Leeds Arts University, 2018). Awards include: <em>The Hunting Young Artist of the Year Award<\/em> (RCA, 2000), <em>The Feiweles Trust Bursary<\/em> (YSP, 2002) and <em>The Gilchrist-Fisher Memorial Award<\/em> (Rebecca Hossack, 2004). Publications include: <em>Pride of Place: A Painter\u2019s Perspective<\/em> (YSP Press, 2002), <em>Readings<\/em> <em>in a Rumour of the End of Art<\/em> (Workshop Press, 2012), <em>Tom Palin: Artist Statements 1993-2012<\/em> (Workshop Press, 2013), \u201cThe White Paintings of Maurice Utrillo\u201d (Turps Banana, 2019) and \u201cThe Context of Medium Specificity: From Riegl to Greenberg\u201d (Journal of Contemporary Painting, 2020), and \u201cOrigins and Ends: Understanding the Medium of Panting According to Heidegger\u2019s Truth\u201d (<em>The Object as a Process<\/em>, Transcript, 2022). Papers include: \u201cTo See or Not to See: Pareidolias and Abstract Painting\u201d (<em>British Abstract Painting in the Eighties<\/em> (Herbert Art Gallery, Coventry, 2018), \u201cPictures, Truths and Methods: From Function to Form in Abstract Painting\u201d (<em>Abstract Painting Now<\/em>, Royal West of England Academy, Bristol, 2019), \u201cPerforming Research: Painting and its Words\u201d (<em>Is Painting research?<\/em> Manchester School of Art, Manchester, 2020, postponed).
