{"id":7229,"date":"2017-09-02T15:22:08","date_gmt":"2017-09-02T15:22:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sustainableagriculturewaitrose.org\/?p=7229"},"modified":"2017-09-02T15:22:08","modified_gmt":"2017-09-02T15:22:08","slug":"researchers-to-look-into-commercial-potential-of-volcanic-dust-boosted-honeyberries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/sustainable-agriculture\/2017\/09\/02\/researchers-to-look-into-commercial-potential-of-volcanic-dust-boosted-honeyberries\/","title":{"rendered":"Researchers to look into commercial potential of volcanic dust boosted honeyberries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-7230\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/sustainable-agriculture\/files\/2017\/09\/Honeyberry-345x250.jpg?resize=300%2C217\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"217\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/sustainable-agriculture\/files\/2017\/09\/Honeyberry-345x250.jpg?resize=300%2C217&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/sustainable-agriculture\/files\/2017\/09\/Honeyberry-345x250.jpg?resize=345%2C250&amp;ssl=1 345w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>A research collaboration between <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reminscotland.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">REMIN<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hutton.ac.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">James Hutton Institute<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huttonltd.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">James Hutton Limited<\/a> and a group of Tayside soft fruit growers led by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arbuckles.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arbuckle&#8217;s<\/a> of Invergowrie has been awarded funding to investigate the economic potential of honeyberries grown using volcanic rock dust fertiliser.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Due to its agronomic qualities such as winter hardiness, frost, and pest and disease resistance, honeyberry (<em>Lonicera caerulea<\/em>) has the potential to become the \u2018fifth\u2019 berry amongst the commercially grown fruits in Scotland after strawberry, raspberry, blueberry and blackberry, showing potential for diversification at low inputs infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Dorota Jarret, fruit breeder at James Hutton Limited and lead academic contact for the project, said: &#8220;Our aim is to develop a system for improving plant establishment, health and soil performance in honeyberries, using natural and local resources such as volcanic rock dust.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Aiding establishment of crops such as honeyberry forms grounds for increasing the area of nutritionally rich crops at low input growing technologies and higher independence from chemical crop protection practices.\u00a0We hope this scientific and commercial collaboration will help catalyse innovation in the food and drink industry.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It is envisioned that this collaboration will bring multi-lateral industry experience and with substantial added benefit of being able to tackle the challenge of sustainable intensification.<\/p>\n<p>REMIN is an innovative Scottish company supplying organically-approved, award-winning soil and compost improver as local, freshly crushed volcanic rock dust. Operating out of Banchory, Aberdeenshire, its products provide minerals and trace elements that are increasingly hard to come by and often referred to as the foundation of plant health.<\/p>\n<p>The project is one of four sharing \u00a325,000 awarded to winners of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.interface-online.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Interface<\/a>&#8216;s Multiparty Competition.
