Practice theory virtual world tour<\/strong><\/p>\n

In which members of the crew visit people listed on the map and learn a bit more about them, their work and how they came across practice theory. The link from the person’s name takes you to a recording of our short chat (5-10 minutes) with them.<\/p>\n

We pretend we are on a boat. Manuel is captain, we have a pirate and an anthropologist and we have has been joined by the ship’s rat which probably came aboard in Sweden.

Stop number 41. Shotaro Yagi,<\/a> in Tokyo, who is No 375<\/a> on the map.\u00a0 \u00a0We travelled to Japan to meet Shotaro and talk about practice theory and its resonance with project management.\u00a0 He gave us a delicacy to enjoy when we get hungry.<\/p>\n

Stop number 40. Manuel Baeriswyl<\/a>, who No 373<\/a> on the map. Manuel is usually in charge of the ship, but it has been taken over by pirates and he has been tied up and forced to answer his own questions.\u00a0 He gave us a cushion to make our life on board more comfortable.<\/p>\n

Stop number 39. Casimir MacGregor,<\/a> who is number 225<\/a> on the map. Casimir is an anthropologist who works for BRANZ, in New Zealand – an organisation that does building research.\u00a0 He is interested in applying ideas about practice architectures and he gave us a Manaia – a <\/em>guardian figure with a bird’s head, human body, and fish tail – to help keep us safe.<\/p>\n

Stop number 38. Matt Watson<\/a>, in Sheffield, is here<\/a> on the map.\u00a0 He has been interested in practices for 25 years or more, and is now working on questions of power in practice theory.\u00a0 He gave us a bottle of Henderson’s relish to spice up our rations.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Stop number 37.\u00a0 Sonja Sch\u00f6nberg<\/a>, in Lugano, is no. 246<\/a> on the map.\u00a0 She works on the history and practice of butchery, and on changing ideas about ‘prime’ cuts of meat.\u00a0 She gave us a piece of Emmental cheese to make raclette. Warming, full of flavor, and providing the energy needed for every manoeuvre \u2014 no matter how rough the seas become.<\/span>\u00a0As you can tell, it is winter on the boat.<\/p>\n

Stop number 36.\u00a0 Berlin, to meet with Ramshid Rashidpour<\/a>, who is no 306<\/a> on the map. She works on food waste and migration, focusing on Iranian migrants to Berlin. She gave us a bottle of saffron tea to help keep us warm.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Stop number 35.\u00a0 Frankfurt, to meet with Anna Wanka<\/a> who is no 296<\/a> on the map.\u00a0 She works on practice theory and concepts of life course and ageing and she gave us a very useful opinel knife small enough to pass through ports without a problem.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Stop number 34. Oslo, SIFO to meet Atle Wehn Hegnes,<\/a> who is no 283<\/a> on the map.\u00a0 His journey in practice theory started with Bourdieu but he’s now working with a range of other concepts and ideas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He gave us a fantastic boat (another one) from the far north of Norway, just in case the captain runs us on to some rocks.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Stop number 33. Medellin, Colombia, EAFIT<\/a>, (Escuela de Administraci\u00f3n, Finanzas e Instituto Tecnol\u00f3gico<\/span>) to meet Heiko Marc Schmidt<\/a>, who is no 189 on the map.\u00a0 He was initially inspired by Giddens, but has moved on to think about practices and processes as a means of explaining what managers do.\u00a0 He gave us a photograph of the Latin American Practice and Process Gathering<\/a> in 2024.\u00a0Follow the link for more information.<\/b><\/p>\n

Stop number 32.\u00a0 Warwick,<\/a> or perhaps Venice, to meet Davide Nicolini<\/a>, who is No 334 on the map. He is a nomad who works between the tribes of practice theory, actor network theory and the sociology of work. He gave us a real souvenir with a nautical theme.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Stop number 31.\u00a0 From Australia to Sweden to meet Ida Wallin<\/a>, who now works in the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences<\/a> in Uppsala. Ida is 45 on the map. She has lots of projects on the go, often related to forests.\u00a0 She gave us a very useful storm lighter in case we run into bad weather and want to make a fire.<\/p>\n

Stop number 30.\u00a0 We sailed to Melbourne to meet Cecily Maller<\/a> who works in Urban Studies at RMIT<\/a>.\u00a0 Cecily is No 324<\/a> on the map and is working on microbes, bodies and practice theory. She gave us a bacteriophage to help protect us from infection.<\/p>\n

Twenty ninth stop.\u00a0 We met Renate Kratochvil<\/a>, who works in Marketing and Strategy in Stockholm. <\/a>Renate, who is No 125<\/a> on the map, is enthusiastic about studying organisations through the lens of practice theory.\u00a0 She gave us a picture of a lighthouse to stop us foundering on the rocks.<\/p>\n

Twenty eighth stop: We met Nick Hopwood<\/a> from the University of Technology, Sydney<\/a>. No 320<\/a> on the map.\u00a0 He is interested in agency, practice theory architectures and a not-entirely-flat ontology. He gaves us a fantastic model of a rollercoaster ride.<\/p>\n

Twenty seventh stop: We met Marie Plessz<\/a>, from INRAE,<\/a> in Paris which is the National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and the Environment. No 285<\/a> on the map.\u00a0 She gave us a notebook to take on our travels – perhaps this will be the ship’s log?<\/p>\n

Twenty sixth stop: We met Bente Halkier<\/a>, from Copenhagen University<\/a> in Denmark and is no 310<\/a> on the map. She works on food and practice theory and she gave us a cabbage to eat on our way – perhaps in a stir fry.<\/p>\n

Twenty fifth stop: In which we have a quick chat with Mary Mwanzia<\/a>, from KCA University<\/a> in Nairobi. No. 295<\/a> on the map.\u00a0 She gave us a Masai dress to take with us on our travels.<\/p>\n

Twenty fourth stop: where we met Dale Southerton<\/a> from the University of Bristol <\/a>who is no 292<\/a> on the map.\u00a0 He first encountered theories of practice in 2004, and he tells us what happened after that. He gave us a picture of\u00a0 a ‘videophone’<\/a> – an image of what video calling might be like – from an article on the future of telecommunications, produced in 1969. See the BT digital archive<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Twenty third stop: the lakes of Sweden, to visit Michela Cozza<\/a> who is no. 181<\/a> on the map. She is from Malardalen University<\/a>, and she is interested in aging, technologies, feminism and practice based lenses. She gave us Pippi Longstocking to keep us company on our travels.<\/p>\n

Twenty second stop: Back to Europe and to Amsterdam to meet Christian Br\u00f6er<\/a> from the University of Amsterdam<\/a>.\u00a0 He is not yet on the map, but\u00a0 works on social aspects of health, and on practices and time.\u00a0 He gave us a very versatile handkerchief – we can use it as a hat, a mop, or a fashion accessory.<\/p>\n

Twenty first stop: Off to Brazil to meet Rosalia Lavarda<\/a>, from the Federal University of Santa Catarina in Brazil<\/a>.\u00a0 She works on strategy as practice and is no 269<\/a> on the map. She gave us another little boat – perhaps a life boat or a means to get ashore?\u00a0 Our captain is thrilled.<\/p>\n

Twentieth stop: in which we meet Hanna Carlsson<\/a>, who is no 281<\/a> on the map and who works at the Radboud University,<\/a> Nijmegen in the Netherlands.\u00a0 She gave us a beautiful bicycle made from strange materials.<\/p>\n

\"\"Nineteenth stop: From Switzerland to Kendal to meet Josi Fernandes<\/a> from Lancaster University Management School<\/a>. No. 179<\/a> on the Map. She is interested in fish and in the relation between practice theory and market studies.\u00a0 She gave us a packet of Kendal mint cake for our next expedition.<\/p>\n

Eighteenth stop: The captian is back in charge and we travelled to Switzerland in order to meet Marlyne Sahakian<\/a> from Geneva<\/a>.\u00a0 No. 277<\/a> on the map. She talked with us about using practice theory to study sustainable consumption.\u00a0 She gave us a comic book to read on our travels.<\/p>\n

Seventeenth stop: in which we meet Deborah Giustini<\/a>,<\/a> no 191<\/a> on the map, from KU Leuven\/Hamad Bin Khalifa University<\/a>, who talked with us about practice theory, language, translation and the organisation of work.\u00a0 She gave us a packet of frites, in the form of a fridge magnet from Brussels.<\/p>\n

Sixteenth stop: the pirate is still in charge.\u00a0 She has taken the boat to Utrecht, where we met Lenneke Kuijer<\/a>, who works at Eindhoven no 262<\/a> on the map.\u00a0 Lenneke is interested in applying practice theory to design, and she gave us a picture of a ‘sweat shirt’ – a living garment designed to make use of the body’s own method of evaporative cooling. Drawn by Shams Hazim. This will be handy when we are next in the tropics.<\/p>\n

Fifteenth stop: the pirate took over the ship and sailed it to New York.\u00a0 There we met Charis Asante-Agyei<\/a>, who works at Syracuse University<\/a> and is no 253<\/a> on the map. He is studying entrepreneurship as practice and he gave us an interesting pill – a capsule with a secret message – to take on our way.<\/p>\n

Fourteenth stop: we finally captured Dirk Ploos van Amstel,<\/a> doing a PhD at Eindhoven University<\/a>, but living in Maastricht.\u00a0 No 213<\/a> on the map.\u00a0 He gave us a jar of peanut butter to take on our way.<\/p>\n

Thirteenth stop, Jane Wilkinson<\/a> from Monash<\/a>. No 227<\/a> on the map.\u00a0 She gave us a painting to take on our way.\u00a0 It is big, but the captain says it can go in his cabin.<\/p>\n

Twelfth stop, Seweryn Rudniki<\/a> from the University of Krakow<\/a>\u00a0 No. 226 on the map.\u00a0 He gave us a very useful roll of duct tape, to help keep our ideas together and to fix the boat.<\/p>\n

Eleventh stop, Ted Schatzki<\/a> from the University of Kentucky<\/a> and Lancaster University, No. 3 on the map.\u00a0 He gave us a jar of instant coffee to take on our way. This will be useful since we’ve finished the cup we were given on our fifth stop.<\/p>\n
