In collaboration with the project \u2018Dramatizing Penshurst\u2019, Victoria Wainwright\u2019s class visited Penshurst Place with their sketchbooks and took inspiration from the plants mentioned in the script of Lady Mary Wroth\u2019s play Love\u2019s Victory<\/em> and those visible in the gardens and landscape on site.<\/p>\n

Penshurst Place has a range of different garden spaces, from enclosed formal gardens to more open orchards, walks and landscapes.<\/p>\n

Sketching in the grounds, with views of the hybrid architecture of Penshurst Place, helped the artists to respond to the organic and historical resonances of Love\u2019s Victory<\/em>, whose script is which is full of natural landscapes and details of flowers. In the opening scene, for example, the romantic hero, Philisses, sings to the meadows:<\/p>\n

\nYour pleasure no more prove
\nYour beauty more admire,
\nYour colours more adore
\nNor grass with daintiest store

Through the seasons, the range of different garden spaces at Penshurst offer on-site models for illustrating these scenes.<\/p>\n

The course was officially held at Kent Adult Education Centre in Sevenoaks and the students and tutors visited Penshurst Place on four occasions.<\/p>\n
