{"id":392,"date":"2019-12-13T18:42:11","date_gmt":"2019-12-13T18:42:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/physics-bulletin\/?p=392"},"modified":"2019-12-13T18:42:11","modified_gmt":"2019-12-13T18:42:11","slug":"physics-friday-bulletin-2019-12-13","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/physics-bulletin\/2019\/12\/13\/physics-friday-bulletin-2019-12-13\/","title":{"rendered":"Physics Friday Bulletin 2019-12-13"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Important changes to the Library Digitisation Service<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/library\/services\/digitising-content\/\">Library Digitisation Service<\/a> provides links to accessible, CLA licence-compliant digitised readings for use on Moodle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Improvements to the service<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The scans are currently stored on a University server but in 2020 we are joining the Copyright Licensing Agency\u2019s collaborative web-based service, the Digital Content Store (DCS) which will enable us to deliver readings more quickly and efficiently.\u00a0 The system combines a searchable repository of digitised book and journal extracts with an online workflow management tool.\u00a0\u00a0 Over 90 UK HEIs are already populating the repository with resources that we will be able to use and add to.\u00a0 The DCS will also be integrated with our Leganto Resource List system, so you will able to request digitisations when adding citations to your list.<\/p>\n<p><strong>New requests from 2020<br \/>\n<\/strong>New scans requested from January will be delivered via a link to the DCS.\u00a0 Scans will open in a custom reader; they can also be printed and the pdf downloaded.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Scans already in use<\/strong><br \/>\nExisting scans provided\/recorded by the digitisation service will be uploaded into the DCS by the Library where they will receive a new link.\u00a0 The Library will replace all the existing links in Resource Lists and on Moodle from June onwards.\u00a0 Scans which are available as pdfs on Moodle will also need to be replaced by the new link.\u00a0 Library staff will do this in consultation with you; it will no longer be possible for pdf scans to be placed on Moodle.<br \/>\nIf you would like to discuss any aspects of the enhanced service, please contact us at <a href=\"mailto:academicliaison@lancaster.ac.uk\">academicliaison@lancaster.ac.uk<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Lorna Pimperton <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Use of SUA &amp; Drones for teaching &amp; research<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>There is a meeting for interested parties around the use of drones as part of research and teaching in the new year with the University\u2019s safety officer. \u00a0The University has produced some guidance regarding the use of Small Unmanned Aircraft &amp; drones <a href=\"https:\/\/portal.lancaster.ac.uk\/intranet\/services\/people\/health-and-safety\/suasdrones\/arrangements-for-operating-drones\">https:\/\/portal.lancaster.ac.uk\/intranet\/services\/people\/health-and-safety\/suasdrones\/arrangements-for-operating-drones<\/a> and if anyone is interested in attending the meeting let me know and I can ensure the details are passed on.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shonah Ion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Facilities works<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Emergency Lighting Testing in Physics will take place week commencing 16th December 2019 \u00a0from 9am daily. Every month there is a quick test to ensure all Emergency Lighting fittings are operational. This involves a quick visual test. In residences, this applies to corridors and kitchens. There are longer, more involved tests at 6 month and 12 month intervals. We will be notified should any of these be occurring.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shonah Ion <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Power off this weekend<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>At 9:30am on Saturday the 14th December the power to the building will be turned off. This is to test the generator that is in Physics avenue.<br \/>\nWe have been advised that power will be off for a maximum of 10 minutes, then we will run on the generator for 10 minutes and then return to mains supply, the return to mains should be less than 15 seconds.<br \/>\nIf you have any equipment that will be badly affected by this please turn it off and unplug to protect it if you can.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shonah Ion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Tables &amp; chairs available<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>There are a number of tables\/desks and operator chairs available in C02. If you can use them please see me next week to arrange to view or take them away<u>.<\/u><\/p>\n<p><strong>Shonah Ion <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Lancaster University Challenge \u2013 Call out to give blood <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Each unit of blood donated can save the lives of up to three adults or up to seven babies. That\u2019s why Lancaster University has partnered with NHS Blood and Transplant to launch the 1,000 Pint Challenge on campus, with the aim of collecting 1,000 blood donations from our staff and students in the 2019-20 academic year.<br \/>\n<strong>Blood donation: the facts<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul type=\"square\">\n<li>You can donate blood between the ages of 17 and 66 (70 if you\u2019ve given blood before).<\/li>\n<li>Men can give blood every 12 weeks and women can give blood every 16 weeks.<\/li>\n<li>The closest centre to campus is Lancaster Donor Centre on Ashton Road, just 10 minutes from campus. Here, a token system will be used to keep track of donations from Lancaster staff and students.
