It will tell you what you need to do before and after your upgrade takes place: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/iss\/office365-migration\/\">http:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/iss\/office365-migration\/<\/a>. If you\u2019ve got a PCInfo icon on your desktop it\u2019s a supported one, and clicking on the icon will tell you whether it\u2019s Windows 7 or Windows 10.<br \/>\n<strong>Why are we changing to Office 365 email?<br \/>\n<\/strong>Office 365 is a cloud based service that offers Lancaster the next generation of email:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It has a larger email quota per mailbox so you\u2019re less likely to run out of space;<\/li>\n<li>It has a better web interface than Exchange email;<\/li>\n<li>Being cloud-based, it\u2019s a more flexible and scalable system to meet the ongoing requirements of the University (it has been assessed for email security); and<\/li>\n<li>It will provide a consistent user experience, with all staff and students using the same system.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Ruth Harries (Paterson)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Cambridge lab to be open to all<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>The upgraded Cavendish Laboratory at the University of Cambridge will reserve up to 25 per cent of its equipment time for researchers from other institutions, the physics lab\u2019s head has told Research Fortnight.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Work on the \u00a3300-million facility at the university\u2019s West Cambridge site could start by the summer. This third home for the Cavendish, the largest physics and astronomy department in the UK, should be finished by December 2021.<br \/>\nOpening the facility to researchers from outside Cambridge was crucial for the project to win government backing, said Andy Parker, head of the Cavendish Laboratory. \u201cWhat we\u2019ve said to the government is that in return for its investment, we\u2019ll make 25\u00a0per cent of the time on our facilities available to outside users on the same basis as our internal users,\u201d he said.<br \/>\nUniversities with no previous collaborations with Cambridge will have priority, Parker said.<br \/>\nThe lab\u2019s construction will be funded with \u00a375m each from the government, the university and the estate of audio-company founder Ray Dolby. A further \u00a375m is yet to be found but is being underwritten by the university.<\/p>\n<p>According to a spokeswoman from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, the national status of the lab was \u201ca key rationale\u201d for the government\u2019s decision to invest. Funding the Cavendish with the condition of opening up its facilities allows the government to improve the sharing of capital equipment between researchers and institutions, she said.<br \/>\nPrevious sharing schemes have been attempted through initiatives such as national infrastructure roadmaps, but have sometimes foundered in practice, says Parker. \u201cYou have to have a system in place that makes sharing possible, and that\u2019s what\u2019s really failed in previous initiatives.\u201d<br \/>\nTo deal with this, the lab\u2019s equipment\u2014including an electron microscope suite, cleanroom, low temperature lab and materials characterisation suites\u2014will be bookable online. Any time not claimed by academics will be available for industry use.<\/p>\n<p>A six-member committee will steer the facility\u2019s operation, Parker said. Four of them will be university academics, including the pro vice-chancellor for research of the University of Cambridge, Chris Abell. Based on general materials limitation, goal (a) is &#8220;making more with less&#8221; and since materials consumption contradicts with such limited resources, goal (b) is recycling. Both are leading to advanced materials processing with the utilization of larger surface and finer structures leading to nanostructures.<\/p>\n<p>The more modern and developed the society is, the higher are the innovation barriers represented by regulations and standards but also by availablity &#8220;close to satisfaction&#8221;. E. g. cleantech for transportation suffers on the very cost effective \/ high quality (even including very clean) availability of fossil based transportation\/automotive technology and infrastructure. About 135 years ago, the first commercial combustion engine did operate a few hours in lifespan, today a fuelcell is required to operate thousands of hours under extreme safety regulations particularly with respect to hydrogen.<\/p>\n<p>Even the political driven and not very scientific nor realistic horror scenario around CO2\/Carbon Footprint\/IPCC could and cannot help. There is nothing wrong with carbon but fossiles since hundred years are too good and too short just for burning them away. There is something very wrong with our politics as we do not need a mega-expensive green religion since we do have green technology.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This presentation will address HKP-technology &amp; technical materials examples in brief:<\/strong><br \/>\n<u>a) hydrogen economy, hydrogen storage<\/u><br \/>\nB4S-SM\/MM: worldwide first semi-commercial Boronhydride based solidstate Hydrogen-tank based on a complex reactive hydride composite (RHC, LiBH4 + MgH2) for a storage material capability &gt; 8 wt.% and &gt; 80 kg H2\/m3 (HZG, Zoz etal).<\/p>\n<p><u>b) energy and transportation, anti-corrosion and clean chemistry<\/u><br \/>\nHydrolium\u00ae\/H2Tank2Go\u00ae: Zoz ZEV-fleet &amp; H2-OnAir (Zoz\/HZG\/Airbus etal.); ZoLiBat\u00ae: 3 gen. Additional cost compared to conventional OPCC in about 10 USD per ton\/concrete !<\/p>\n<p><u>d) TaraxagumTM, auto-tires from dandelion<\/u><br \/>\nNot nanostructure but similar processing technology application, a novel processing route of generating high quality rubber from the roots of dandelion plant will be explaind under legal limitations. The teaching labs have been modernised to become show pieces for the department, and the building now features improved sustainability and accessibility. The refurbishment has targeted a BREEAM Excellent standard which measures a building&#8217;s environmental performance and the effect it will have on the wider environment.<\/p>\n<p>We would like to invite you to join us for the official opening of the refurbished building on Thursday 1 March 2017. You are welcome to join us at 2.30pm in the Physics building foyer where we will hear a few short speeches which will mark the completion of the refurbishment. Jocelyn is President of The Royal Society of Edinburgh and is Visiting Professor, Astrophysics, University of Oxford. She was elected as Fellow of the Royal Society in 2003 and was awarded an Honorary Degree from Lancaster University in 2009.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lynne Haley<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Fire Door Interface Inspections <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Fire door interface inspections will take place in Physics on 7th February 2018 from 9am.<br \/>\nEvery month the University is required to test the interface between the fire alarm system and door control systems in all buildings with access control and\/or automatic doors.<br \/>\nThis work is undertaken by Honeywell Control Systems Ltd and requires the physical inspection of all doors controlled by the access control system while the fire alarm is active and the doors are locked. This check is to ensure that all doors on escape routes will allow evacuation in the event that the fire alarm is activated. In most cases the alarm will be silenced during the inspection, but for some older systems, where it is not possible to silence the alarm, the checks have to be conducted while the alarm is sounding. Owing for the requirement for the doors to be locked during this test some buildings, where access is required during the week, will be tested at the weekend.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shonah Ion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Interview Days<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Just a reminder we have our next interview day, February 7th, the day starts at 10:00 and finishes around 15:45.
