The low viscosities and high solute diffusivities in SCFs lead to enhanced mass transfer rates. As a result of such favorable properties, SCFs have been attracting increased attention for development of new processes and new materials in a wide variety of industries. Among the SCFs, supercritical CO2 (scCO2) is particularly attractive since it is cheap, nontoxic, available in large quantities and has an easily accessible critical temperature and pressure. Since it is also a gas at ambient conditions, it leaves no residue on the treated medium. In this talk, I will present an overview of SCFs and discuss some of the research projects on SCFs carried out in my laboratory. These will include supercritical deposition for preparation of supported nanoparticles for energy related applications, measurement of frequency response of microcantilevers in SCFs and synthesis of aerogels and their composites for a wide variety of applications ranging from thermal insulation to optofluidic waveguides.
For further details please contact Harry Hoster.

Please confirm attendance for catering purposes. There will be tea, coffee and cakes served from 11.30. At the same time, an explosion of observational activity is opening new windows on the properties of the populations that make up the bulge. I will present a selection of results from narrow-deep observations from space-based observatories (most prominently the Hubble Space Telescope), which are both shedding new light on the multiple intrinsic populations in the bulge, and will be important calibrators for planned surveys. If time permits, I will introduce some of the exciting new investigations permitted by the new generation of ground-based “wide-fast-deep” surveys, particularly using DECam and the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST).

Grainne Wilkinson

Facilities works in Science & Technology building.

Emergency Lighting Testing in Science & Technology Building will take place week commencing Monday 15th May 2017 from 9am daily.
