The focus of this year\u2019s visits will be on UG recruitment and teaching.<\/p>\n<p>As usual there will be two meetings and both will be held in C36:<\/p>\n<p><em>Part 1: Whole department (0930 \u2013 1030hrs)<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Brief introduction from the Dean (5 minutes)<\/li>\n<li>Brief presentation from the department on undergraduate recruitment and teaching, to cover:\n<ul>\n<li>(for those departments that have completed the UG portfolio review) What are the most important findings of the UG portfolio review and how does the department plan to respond?<\/li>\n<li>What are the 2 or 3 areas where the department feel they are doing very well?\u00a0 Are there things that the department thinks can usefully be shared with other FST departments?<\/li>\n<li>What are the big challenges for the department in terms of UG recruitment and\/or teaching, and how do you plan to respond to these?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>(Please make sure that the department\u2019s approach to assessment and feedback, retention, the NSS and employability is covered as part of this presentation; other areas to consider could include degree outcomes).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Presentation from the Associate Dean for UG Teaching providing an update on University\/Faculty activity relating to UG, outcomes of recent reviews and highlighting the importance of consumer and markets authority (CMA) law as related to degree programmes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Part 2: PEC members (1030 \u2013 1130hrs)<\/em><br \/>\nThis session will be discussion based and will focus on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the department\u2019s financial performance and position relative to the Tribal benchmarking data;<\/li>\n<li>one KPI related to UG activity: recruitment (UK and international).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Grainne Wilkinson<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Congratulations to Licia Ray<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s a pleasure to announce that Licia gave birth to a little girl, Phoebe, on Sunday morning (16 April). \u00a0Both are now back at home and doing well.\u00a0Congratulations to both Licia and Matt!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jim Wild<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>IOP Carers&#8217; Fund<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>There are still some grants available for IOP members who wish to attend a physics related conference or event and would find it helpful to have some financial assistance towards the additional caring costs that may result from attending such an event. So I suggest this may be a good time to have your own mini audit in your work areas. How do you manage the hazards associated with your work? Take a few minutes to review your risk assessments, do they cover your activities? Are you doing new stuff, in a new place? If things do go wrong, do you have a plan to deal with it? How is safety information available to those that need it?<\/p>\n<p>Interviews with a representative cross section of the Department will take place in late April.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shonah Ion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>STFC Events<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>STFC is planning a series of events on Oct 31st as part of an international dark matter day. The events will target both traditional outreach audiences and government to raise the profile of dark matter research in the UK and beyond. I&#8217;m looking to organise some activities related to non-WIMP dark matter searches but I know that various members of the department are also involved with dark matter research from a variety of different perspectives. If anyone else is already planning an event for dark matter day or would be interested in being involved with one then please get in touch so that we can coordinate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ian Bailey<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Request for 2L Pop Bottles<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>As part of the University\u2019s Community Day (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/events\/community-day\/\">http:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/events\/community-day\/<\/a>) the Space and Planetary Physics group will be running several displays and an interactive workshop.<\/p>\n<p>For this, I\u2019d kindly like to request that you save any empty 2-litre pop bottles (e.g. Coke\/Pepsi\/lemonade) you might have and donate them to the SPP group.
