Discipline Hopping for Environmental Solutions at Lancaster
An invitation to an open interactive interdisciplinary event
Tuesday 26th July
On campus (room tbc)
12-3pm
To tackle the complex problems presented by climate change, biodiversity loss and other environmental crises we must go further to bring together deep understanding of environmental science with a whole range of other expertise and perspectives across disciplines and sectors. From biomedicine to the business school, engineering to ethics, physics to politics, and psychology to sociology: what’s needed is a whole-systems approach.
Join us for an interactive event where we will explore opportunities for taking a whole-system approach and share outcomes of a recent UKRI Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) award aimed at helping our institution develop capacity to work across disciplines towards Environmental Solutions.
In this event you will:
- Hear stories of interdisciplinary collaborations from across our campus who work together on environmental solutions through the launch of a new series of digital Discipline Hopping Conversations and Little Books (including one about wor own Manus Hayne).
- Meet others with an interest in interdisciplinary collaboration and have the opportunity to join the Environmental Solutions web platform at Lancaster University.
- Share ideas that can help shape future interdisciplinary initiatives relating to NERC’s strategic priority area in environmental solutions at Lancaster University.
All are welcome. Refreshments will be available, please register by replying to m.dillon1@lancaster.ac.uk to help us with catering
Kind regards
The Discipline Hopping @LU steering group

Teaching Office Cover
As we are now outside of term time, the teaching office staff will be working from home more regularly, coming on to campus as and when is required to carry out tasks where a presence is required. The team can of course be contacted as usual via Teams and Email.
Benjamin will still largely be office based, so please do pop in to A06 if anything is required in person.

Update from the library about UKRI-compliant publishing in APS journals
I just wanted to give you a quick update regarding American Physical Society as I know we’ve had some discussions about their position with the new UKRI OA policy. Jisc have confirmed that they are in negotiation with APS regarding a transformational agreement which would therefore see them become eligible for UKRI funding.
In the meantime, I have also learned that the following titles are in the SCOAP3 consortia agreement and therefore would be compliant with UKRI conditions.
- Physical Review C
- Physical Review D
- Physical Review Letter
Due to the nature of this consortia and its funding method, academics can publisher here OA with a CC-BY licence and thus fulfil the UKRI criteria. You can see all of the titles covered by the SCOAP3 agreement here.
We will continue to monitor the OA landscape and keep you informed if there are any further developments but in the meantime, please do feel free to get in touch if there’s anything else we can help with. Please do also feel free to forward this email on to anyone that you think it would be relevant to.
