Introduction to export control compliance, sanctions and risks of internationalisation (Wed 6th July)

This is a one hour event at 2pm – 3pm on Wednesday 6th July. The link below should lead to a Teams registration form but alternatively people can email me to attend y.fox@lancaster.ac.uk and I will add them to the event.

Further to my email last week to date there are only six academic staff registered to attend this event on export controls.

Please could you encourage your research staff  and postgraduate researchers to sign up. Your departments are the most likely to involve research in the areas that are at risk of including technology/software/knowledge that is controlled and which may require a licence if shared outside of the UK. This means awareness raising in these areas is crucial  to protect both individuals and the university from non-compliance.

Safety contact 4th July – 15th July

During the period 4th July – 15th July if you have an urgent safety concern that cannot wait until I return to the Department on the 18th July, Rupert Prudom will be the primary safety contact. If Rupert is unavailable then Russell Harvey will cover this role.

Update from the library about UKRI-compliant publishing in APS journals

I just wanted to give you a quick update regarding American Physical Society as I know we’ve had some discussions about their position with the new UKRI OA policy. Jisc have confirmed that they are in negotiation with APS regarding a transformational agreement which would therefore see them become eligible for UKRI funding.

In the meantime, I have also learned that the following titles are in the SCOAP3 consortia agreement and therefore would be compliant with UKRI conditions.

  • Physical Review C
  • Physical Review D
  • Physical Review Letter

Due to the nature of this consortia and its funding method, academics can publisher here OA with a CC-BY licence and thus fulfil the UKRI criteria. You can see all of the titles covered by the SCOAP3 agreement here.

We will continue to monitor the OA landscape and keep you informed if there are any further developments but in the meantime, please do feel free to get in touch if there’s anything else we can help with. Please do also feel free to forward this email on to anyone that you think it would be relevant to.

SciLang: Holistic integration
of languages into science
and science into languages

Friday 8th July, starting 9.00 UK time,
approximate fi nish 18.00 UK time.
Hybrid conference in person and online via Microsoft Teams
Lancaster University, Lancaster, United Kingdom
Management School, Robinson Lecture Theatre LT16

Science and Modern Languages are often misperceived as being “separate”, i.e.
one does one or the other, but not both. Although science and languages are rarely
discussed together, there are many scientists who speak (several) languages and use
them in their careers. Furthermore, many linguists are interested in science and make
important contributions to scientifi c and engineering activities

PLASTICS WASTE AND MICROPLASTIC RESEARCH EVENT

12th – 14th July 2022

The Storey, Lancaster

Invitation to register for the first plastic waste and microplastic research conference at Lancaster University.
To register please email Rachel Lyon (msi@lancaster.ac.uk). If your registration is successful, you will be required
to attend the event on all 3 days.

Plastic waste and microplastics are potentially the biggest global environmental challenge after climate change. (And the
two are not unlinked, with plastics in soil displacing carbon.) Beyond plastic waste, microplastics have infiltrated all parts of
the food chain and are now being found in (nearly) all human organs. Their potential to act as vectors for disease
transmission and the development of antimicrobial resistance is only now being recognised.

This workshop will bring together all the multi-facetted threads of plastic waste and micro-plastic research conducted at
Lancaster University in one workshop. International speakers will highlight global challenges and internal speakers will
highlight the quality and quantity of research conducted at Lancaster. The workshop provides a platform for Lancaster
researchers to connect with each other and to build further plastics activities.

Finally, the event provides a forum for our PhDs and early career researchers to present their research, providing for some
their first experience of the intellectual life, following two years of lockdown.

Tuesday 12th July
A presentation from keynote speaker Professor Meththika Vithanage followed by a ‘Question Time’ style Q&A about the future of plastics with a
panel of experts. This session will be facilitated by materials scientist and story teller, Dr. Anna Ploszajski.

Wednesday 13th July
A presentation from keynote speaker Professor Gay Hawkins. After this, the students will be invited to give group presentations about their
research. The presentations will be separated by questions and discussion. This session will be facilitated by Dr. Neil McLatchie. In the evening,
the attendees will participate in a litter pick on Morecambe Bay followed by a dinner at the Midland Hotel.

Thursday 14th July
A session focussed on creating a plastics community at LU and a discussion leading to a list of actions for the community. This session will also be
facilitated by Dr. Neil McLatchie.
