Accident causing magnet

A cleaner was injured on shards of metal stuck to a magnet whilst removing the rubbish bag from the bins outside A02. This was very avoidable incident and shouldn’t have happened.
Dispose of all waste appropriately. If in doubt contact your line manager or supervisor.

Lab shut down over the University winter/Christmas closure period

As usual for the Christmas period, when heating and many services are off and the occupancy of the building is at or near zero most research labs will be closed.
Given the exceptionally tough year we have faced, it is particularly important to give people a proper break and allow them to ‘recharge’ over the extended University closure period, 5pm 20th December to 9am 4th January.

The only permitted activities are essential safety activities or those necessary to maintain long term experiments.
If you envisage the need to attend site please submit a risk assessment and safe Scheme of work as soon and in any case before the 14th December.

Physics Colloquium

Building with Crystals of Light and Quantum Matter: From clocks to quantum computers

Speaker: Professor Ana Maria Rey (JILA, NIST and University of Colorado)

Abstract: Understanding the behavior of interacting electrons in solids or liquids is at the heart of modern quantum science and necessary for technological advances. However, the complexity of their interactions generally prevents us from coming up with an exact mathematical description of their behavior. Precisely engineered ultracold gases are emerging as a powerful tool for unraveling these challenging physical problems.

In this talk, I will present recent developments at JILA on using alkaline-earth atoms (AEAs) – currently the basis of the most precise atomic clock in the world – for the investigation of complex many-body phenomena and magnetism. Specifically, I will discuss ideas on how to use AEAs dressed by laser fields as a tool to engineer useful entangled states. The proposed schemes open a window to enhance clock sensitivity beyond what is possible with uncorrelated atoms, and, set a foundation for future quantum computers.

Multiple occupancy office hygiene

We have had reports from the cleaners of plates with food on being left in multiple occupancy offices.
If you have had permission to come in and use the desk spaces please use the kitchen areas for eating and ensure you leave all areas clean and tidy with waste disposed of in the correct bins.

COVID working Risk Assessments review.

All the risk assessments that have been written for the work being undertaken during the COVID restrictions should be reviewed.
Many have expiry dates that assumed a shorter period of interruption than was the reality, and all need to be reviewed in the light of experience.
Please log these documents and the safe schemes of work associated with them, on the “S” drive in your relevant area.
