Physics Friday Bulletin 2020-04-03

Congratulations

We offer our warm congratulations to our colleague Ashley Wilson and his fiancée Laura Wilkinson who have announced their engagement.
For those who don’t know, Ashley is a member of the electronics workshop team and Laura works in DELC (Department of Languages and Cultures) here on campus.
Ashley proposed, down on one knee, whilst they walked Laura’s dog in the sunshine on the beautiful hills near Quernmore last week.
We wish them the very best for the future.

Farewell to Martin Ward

Martin has been a long-standing member of the Department spending most of his career in the low temperature labs. Working first with Ian Miller and later, as the lead technician with Alan Stokes, making and modifying parts for the experiments and passing on his years of experience to new members of the team. We will miss his jokes & stories as well his help & support.

Obviously, the current situation is not conducive to marking this occasion, so once things are more normal we shall have a proper “do” to thank him for his time here and to wish him well in the future.

Farewell to Chris Somerton

Chris joined the department in 2013 as QTC cleanroom technician, initially working with Atif Aziz and later with Kunal Lulla. Chris’ background in and knowledge of chemistry was an excellent asset to the cleanroom, complementing very well with Kunal’s background in Physics. On top of his technical duties, Chris spent a significant amount of his time on cleanroom processing becoming a very accomplished user of several pieces of specialized equipment. His systematic, focused working methodology and “get on with it quietly” attitude towards his work will surely be missed.
