Soldering Focus

There is a focus across campus on the safety issues associated with soldering. If you didn’t receive a request for information from me previously and do indeed solder please let me know. I have had responses from the ULT labs and  workshops.
The issues are the lead content and also the fumes from the rosin fluxes which are known to be irritants to the airways. Please ensure you read the data sheet for the solder you are using and have suitable ventilation in the work area.

Anti-casualisation policies

Our own Alex Finch is thanked for his role in drafting the new anti-casualisation policies that have been adopted by the University, in the message below from Lancaster UCU:

“After many years of campaigning on anti-casualisation by LUCU, we are delighted that our negotiations with management have resulted in a new policy being adopted, which should result in many more colleagues being offered permanent contracts.

Thank you to all the UCU exec members who helped to make this happen, including Alex Finch, James Groves and Nils Markusson. The challenge now is to keep up the pressure on management to actually implement the policy!
We will look into this in detail in early 2020, and keep members updated.”

The Analysis of Nuclear Materials: from Pre Irradiation Examinations to Post Irradiation Examinations

A076a Faculty of Science and Technology training suite | Tuesday 21 January 2020, 10:30am to 12:00pm

The challenge of analyzing nuclear-related materials is that normal procedures are difficult to use because of the radiation field surrounding the material. At the other end of the spectrum, the difficulty is to analyse these materials in which concentrations of radionuclides are extremely low.
