Generator Test
On the 14 of December the new generator that’s down Physics AV Will be tested. This will involve a start-up of the generator, power to the Physics building being switched off. The Department will then run for approx. 20 minutes on the generator before being switched back onto mains. This date is not set in stone. If you foresee any problems with this date for the test can you please contact myself or Shonah. Regards Martin

Be Informed – Lancaster University Wellbeing Update
Dear colleagues
We’ve been working with Unite the Union to make a firm joint proposition on the subject of Workplace Wellbeing taking into consideration the results of the 2018 Staff Survey. A joint paper was submitted to the University Management Advisory Group (UMAG), Health and Safety Consultative Committee (HSCC) and the University’s Safety, Health and Wellbeing Committee (C-SHaW) recommending that the five ways to wellbeing becomes the framework for the new Staff Wellbeing Webpages.
It was agreed to create a Task and Finish Group based on representation from the Faculties and Professional Services to create a comprehensive institutional wide offering.
The group are now in a position to share our draft Lancaster University Wellbeing web content and we’d really appreciate you having a look through this site and sharing any comments on it, bearing the following in mind please:
- Is the content useful? Functional? Correct?
- Is there any content you feel is missing?
- Is there any content you feel doesn’t need to be there?
- Is there any content you don’t understand/needs to be clearer? Please explain why.
- Is there any content you feel is not in the right location?
- Please share any thoughts on look and feel overall
- Please share any other thoughts on how to improve the content…
- What questions and answers are missing from the FAQ?
Please include direct links to any pages that you are giving feedback on, thank you.
Please would you email your feedback to staffwellbeing@lancaster.ac.uk by no later than Friday 29 November 2019.
We hope that you find the webpages to be a useful source of information and look forward to hearing your feedback. Thank you.

Superconductors for fusion
Speaker: Prof. Susie Speller
Venue: Furness – LT 3
Date and Time: 5th November 2019 – 14:00
Abstract:
Harnessing power safely and economically from nuclear fusion is a major global goal for the 21st century. Magnets are a key enabling technology for fusion, with powerful magnetic fields required to confine the plasma. Almost all design concepts for commercial fusion reactors rely on superconductors for efficient and reliable generation of the magnetic fields. This seminar will focus on the properties of superconductors that make them attractive for fusion magnets, as well as the materials challenges that need to be overcome to enable the next generation of fusion devices.

Tony Guenault
I am sorry to have to report that Tony Guenault, our colleague and former Head of Department, passed away at 8am this morning after having suffered a stroke several days ago. We will update people with any further news on the family’s wishes for condolences and funerals when we have them, but in the meantime we send our support to his widow Joan and the rest of his family, and gratitude for a life well lived.
