Climate emergency campaign at Lancaster University – how you can help

As we approach Sept 20th, a day of global action on climate change, the LU Climate Emergency Working group wishes to propagate the following message.

Climate emergency campaign at Lancaster University – how you can help

1.      Sign this petition (using your @lancaster.ac.uk email) to ask the University to declare and respond to the climate and ecological emergency:
https://www.change.org/p/lancaster-university-declare-and-respond-to-the-climate-emergency

Many other institutions, including universities and local councils have already made similar declarations, for example the University of Bristol and Lancaster City Council.

What does the petition ask for?
It asks Senior Management to commit to a rapid decarbonisation action plan, with the aim of becoming carbon neutral by 2030.

Why should I sign it?
It lets Senior Management know that the LU Community feels strongly that the University can and should lead the way on innovative solutions to the climate crisis.

2.      Get involved in Global Climate Day on Friday 20th September (https://www.campaigncc.org/climate_strike_20_september) at which millions of people across the world are taking the day off to support young climate strikers, demanding climate action before it is too late.

a)      Here at Lancaster Uni, we’re encouraging everyone to stop working for 30 minutes at 12pm, and come along to Alex Square. We are delighted that HR and senior management have confirmed their support for this stoppage of work for half an hour.

We’d love to create the exciting visual of a Human Globe with everyone who pops down:

We’d also encourage you to set up an ‘out of office’ message that day (even if you only join us for half an hour) and mention the climate strike to raise awareness.  (e.g. I will be out of the office today to support the Global Climate Strike https://globalclimatestrike.net/).

We hope to have a drone filming on the day, a couple of speeches and the opportunity to help us create a video about the University’s responsibilities and plans towards becoming carbon neutral, and what climate action looks like to you.

b)      If you’d like to support the climate strikers by taking more time off, Lancaster Youth For Environment (LYFE) are hosting an event in town from 11-2pm in solidarity with those all over the world striking on the day. More information can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/events/362061484506111/. For those that wish to, there will be a mass bike ride after the Alex Square event into town to join LYFE.

We have the following advice from HR on this: “Any time taken above 30 minutes would be subject to normal HR processes, however we are sympathetic to these requests and will support HoDs in considering and responding to these requests”.

We really look forward to seeing as many people there as possible.

See you there!

Car parking spaces on Physics AV

The car parking spaces that are corded off down Physics AV will be back in use after the 27 September. The contractors were to have a compound in the underpass. But this deemed to be unsafe, and was relocated to Physics AV with no notice. This is what has just been communicated to me from facilities.

Performance Development Reviews for 18/19

A reminder that PDR season is upon us and that meetings and paperwork needs to be completed by the end of September. I’d be grateful if reviewers could ensure that meetings are in place if they are not already.

You will recall that we’re moving to an on-line PDR system. You can access your PDR form via the HR portal, (https://my.corehr.com/pls/coreportal_lancp/corePortal/#EmpDash). If you experience any technical issues pls contact hr.mi@lancaster.ac.uk
